Each person has the right to put in a hard days work and go home and enjoy a meal with loved ones, have a roof over their head, and enjoy the many blessings of life. Our leadership in NYS is denying people the right by cutting good community-serving jobs - including jobs in hospitals and mental health facilities. The Governor has told the people of NYS that there is a surplus in the budget and that we can afford to give tax cuts to the wealthy and yet, at the same time, he is eliminating good jobs for the people of NY. Hundreds gathered at the PEF Save our Services rally today to protest these cuts to service and employment. AFT President Randi Weingarden, who received a standing ovation for her speech at the rally, harkened back to the leadership of FDR. When FDR was faced with the most serious depression in the history of America, he did not respond respond with austerity and cuts. Instead FDR and even the pope today call us to reinvest and reinvent. It only together, only by investing in our communities and our people, that we will make this economy better, rung by rung by rung, until at last we have a ladder to prosperity!
