Demand Democracy in New York
This spring we’ve been reminded yet again how badly New York’s political system needs reform.
April’s primary highlighted New York’s low voter turnout and antiquated registration process. Then May brought the sentencing of former Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos AND former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver on corruption charges.
Enough is enough.
Labor-Religion Coalition of New York State is proud to be one of dozens of groups endorsing the Demand Democracy platform, which calls for publicly funded elections, campaign finance reform, a modernized voting process, expanded voting rights, and ethics reform. You can register your support for the Demand Democracy agenda by signing the petition to Gov. Cuomo and legislative leaders here.
Expanding and protecting democracy in New York State is vital to all the other issues we work on. As long as our elections and legislators can be bought by a small group of wealthy individuals and companies, the voices and needs of poor and working people will fall on deaf ears in Albany. We can’t allow this dynamic to continue.
Our elected officials still have time to take action on these issues this session, but they will need to feel public pressure in order to do so.Please sign and share the Demand Democracy petition today.
The coalition is also planning a week of action across the state, June 6-13. Stay tuned for more details, and if you’re interested in helping to plan or host an event in your area, please email Emily at emcneill [at] labor-religion.org!
